
The Gila County Sheriff’s Posse was formed in 1967 to assist the Sheriff and the people of Gila County. The Posse is a 501c(3) nonprofit volunteer organization.
The Sheriff’s Posse assists the Sheriff’s Office in many law enforcement duties. Among these are patrol, crime scene security, prisoner transport and
security, traffic control, and other ancillary services during disasters. The Posse also provides logistical support to search and rescue missions.
The Posse participates in the following types of activities:
- Secure crime scenes
- Assist Detectives
- Assist Sheriff’s Deputies and the Department of Public Safety with traffic control
- Assist the Forest Service
- Assist the Payson Police Department
- Assist rural Fire Departments
- Maintain road blocks for snow, flood, or fire emergencies
- Provide jail transports
- Provide control over civil events, security and traffic
- Provide personnel for emergency command posts
- Assist in Search and Rescue operations
- Represent the Sheriff’s Office in parades
- Provide assistance to the Sheriff’s Communication Center
- Any other support to the Sheriff and Deputies as requested


The north Gila Co. Sheriff Posse main activities are focused in the Gila Co. northern regional area down to about the East-West Line at Roosevelt Dam. North Posse is headquartered and stationed out of Payson & Surrounding Community Satellite Squads.
South Posse is headquartered and stationed out of Globe. The current area of duties can be anywhere within Arizona. (What does this mean?)
